📅: 22nd February | Saturday
⏰: 5:30 PM
📍: Arthshila Santiniketan
Bio:
Martin Kämpchen was born in Germany, and studied in Vienna and Paris. After a PhD in German Literature, he moved to India, first teaching German in Kolkata, then joining the University again with M.A. in Indian Philosophy from Madras, Ph.D. in Comparative Religion from Visva-Bharati. Since 1980, he has lived in Santiniketan. He has translated Rabindranath’s poetry from Bengali to German, written his German biography and researched his relationship with Germany.
About the event:
Among his activities as a writer, translator and journalist, Martin Kämpchen has recently added writing books for children in India. He has published three volumes, each with a different setting – the Himalayas, a Santal village in Birbhum, and Kolkata. In each, the author explores the specific needs and expectations of poor children. In spite of their deprivation, the children aspire to a life of joy and fulfilment, each in his or her individual way.
Why does a German-born writer enjoy writing for Indian children in English? Apart from discussing this, he will read a few pages from each book and then interact with the audience.
We look forward to seeing you all!
