The twentieth century belonged to cinema, but only recently has film studies examined its deep public appeal. With the internet, cinephile communities have preserved popular cinema through collective labour, creating a living public archive beyond state neglect. Though many films are lost, their paper traces and songs endure. These remnants reveal how cinema travels across media, page, screen, and sound, to survive beyond the cinema hall.
