Kumar Gandharva, a child prodigy who went on to become one of the finest and most original voices in Indian classical music, was struck by tuberculosis at the height of his abilities. For years, confined to bed and unable to sing freely, he absorbed sounds from nature, distant folk melodies, and the rhythms of everyday life.
