Janani’s Juliet revolves around Kausalya, who loses her husband, Shankar, when they are attacked by her own family. They had married against their families’ wishes. Deeply disturbed by a spate of honor killings in India, Indianostrum, a Pondicherry-based theatre group, sets out to introspect on the implications of caste, class, and gender. They adapt Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ What emerges in the process is a critical reflection and commentary on contemporary Indian society, where love struggles to survive.

The film has received great acclaim. Apart from being the recipient of several awards, it was also India’s Official entry to the Oscar’s in 2019.

Pankaj Rishi Kumar graduated from the FTII Pune, India, in 1992, specializing in Film Editing. He served as an assistant editor on Sekhar Kapur’s ‘Bandit Queen’ after completing his studies. Following his work on various documentaries and TV serials, he directed his debut film, ‘Kumar Talkies.’ Since then, Pankaj has operated as a one-man crew, overseeing the production, direction, shooting, and editing of his films under the banner of Kumar Talkies.
