The talk will focus on the pleasures of the archives, particularly in their ability to allow us insights into how an architect worked. The drawings, models, notes and musings – such as the ones presented in the exhibition at Arthshila – are the vital ingredients in freeing us from the incredible weight that the reputation of an architect comes with, bringing us closer to the practice that resulted in the works we encounter. In the process, we become engaged thinkers, meeting the practitioner rather than merely consuming his work.

𝗦𝗵𝘂𝗯𝗵𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝗷𝗲’𝘀 practice involves designing buildings and teaching architecture. With graduate and postgraduate degrees in architecture and a minor in theory and criticism from Cornell and CEPT Universities, she founded shubhra raje_built environments, an architecture and design studio that concerns itself with relevant design, architectural economy, and spatial ecology. Her encounters with Raje’s work began as a toddler on his drafting table at the office located until the early 2000s in the IIMA campus, and have continued through her student years and current research into his work, practice, and teaching activities. 

Vishwanath Kashikar is an educationist immersed in fundamentally questioning the nature and role of education in society. He is currently senior associate professor and program chair of the master of architecture [housing design] program at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University. Those who do not know him well are vexed by the slowness and brevity in his conversations. And when he is not reading or talking about education, you can find him gardening, listening to music, having fascinating discussions with his kids, or grinding his own coffee!
