An ๐ถ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ that weaves together music, memory and community-history, Tangail Shari Taar Garober Dhan is a heartfelt performance by artists from Phuliaโs migrant weaver families, sharing their communityโs journeyโfrom the roots of the Tangail sari in Bangladesh to rebuilding a thriving tradition in West Bengal after Partition. Through song, storytelling and narration, they bring to life the community pride, resilience, creativity, and cross-border heritage, woven into the very thread of their existence. It narrates, in a story format how the Tangail sari evolved from its origins in Tangail (now in Bangladesh) through innovations like the โJhapโ and Jacquard designs to gain popularity.
And eventually, how the partition led to Phulia becoming the new heart of the Tangail weaving tradition, transforming it into one of the major centres for handloom weaving in West Bengal and India.
The ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฒ will lead a ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ธ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต of the exhibition ‘Shifted Identities’ before the performance, setting the stage for this intimate musical narration.
๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฒ is a designer, craft researcher, and scholar specializing in South Asian art history, with a focus on living traditions and textile crafts.
