A House for Dubki by Priya Narayanan is a many-layered picture book. While at the outset it is about a migrant child, Yasmin, wanting to build a house for Dubki, a stray dog, and all the fun and clamour that follows it, it conceals Yasmin’s own yearning for her home back in her village by the sea and her angst about the tin boxes they live in in the big city even as her parents build fancy houses for others. In this session, Priya will be reading an excerpt from the book and engaging children in conversations around homes and memories. It will be followed by a short activity where participants draw out memorable objects from their lives, write about those memories and create a memory box to preserve them.

Priya Narayanan is an interior designer, poet and award-winning children’s author. Amongst her books for children are Ten Heads for Tanuj that won the Peek-a-Book Children’s Choice award and the Neev Book Award winning Srinivasa Ramanujan: Friend of Numbers. The latter also won the Mathical Book Prize in the US and is listed among the top 40 international books of 2024 by the United States Board of Books for Young People (USBBY). Bringing together her passion for design and writing for children, her new venture, UMU Fun Furniture, features a debut collection of Story Chairs for 3-8-year-olds where each chair comes with a unique storybook. When not practicing and teaching design, she likes to travel solo and read, the latter mandating an endless supply of chocolate-chip ice cream or hot coffee.
