In The Arcades Project (1982), Walter Benjamin writes about โrag pickingโ as archival research; the idea was to collect โwasteโ. Such archives are subjective, incomplete, and informal. In this context we ask: What is the โarchival turnโ in arts practice? And, is the archive still turning? We think against the grain, and consider: Why do archives matter at all, and what is an archive? How are archival materials found, recovered, โsavedโ, reenvisioned and reactivated by artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers? Can we think through archival matters and material and address how โrepressed, messy or unstable substances and impure formationsโ (Lange-Berndt 2015) may surface through our work? The workshop focuses on the debates around โarchives and materialityโ, and how arts practice makes the unknown visible.
