Join us for Clay, Craft and Rhythm by Sumana Chandrashekar, in conversation with Lakshmi Subramanian on the book Song of Clay Pot at Arthshila Goa.

The session is centred around the book Song of Clay Pot, Sumana and Lakshmi will share some of these stories, even as they reflect on the layers of hierarchies that inform relationships between instruments and artists, along with the politics, aesthetics, and lived experiences that are part of the world that the Ghatam inhabits.

Sumana Chandrashekar is a Ghatam player, writer, and researcher who studies under Sukanya Ramgopal and has also trained in Carnatic vocal music. Her work spans performance, collaborative projects, and research on music histories, particularly at the intersection of language, migration, gender, and music.

Lakshmi Subramanian is a historian educated at University of Calcutta and Visva-Bharati University who has taught at several international universities. She is currently a professor at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani – Goa Campus and the author of multiple books on India’s economic and cultural history.
