Santal mythology knows several narratives about the creation of the world and of human beings. Some have been recorded and documented, others live on as oral tradition. The version which we present here has been narrated by Korean Guru and recorded by Lars Olsen Skrefrud in his book ‘The Traditions and Institution of the Santals’ (Hor Koren Mare Hapramkoak Katha), published in 1887. The history and the myth of the Santals has not been explored and written down by the Santals themselves. The memories that exist have come down to them from their ancestors through oral tradition. These memories have taken shape as myths, songs, folk tales and dances.
