Arthshila Ahmedabad’s Film Showcase this week features a series of short films that look into the exploration of modern trends within arts and design in India.
‘Gandhi, Nehru and Modern Art’ by Arun Khopkar shows the emergence of individual modern artists as a result of the colonial transformation of the country, colonial hegemony and its nationalistic negation and also focuses on how Gandhian and Nehru influenced the artist during the years leading to and following independence.
‘The Unknown Shore’ by S. Bhaskar traces the evolution of fine arts practices in India. K.K. Hebbar and M.F. Husain, two prominent painters and a leading sculptor, AM Davierwalla participate in the conversation about changing artist preoccupations and the role played by national institutions such as the Lalit Kala Academy which was established in 1954. The film talks about the opening of opportunities for artists through national exhibitions, state exhibitions and cultural exchanges.
‘Forms and Design’ by Mani Kaul is a short film that sets up an opposition between functional forms of the industrial age and decorative ones from Indian tradition
