About the book:
‘The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable’ is a 2016 non-fiction book by Indian writer Amitav Ghosh discussing climate change. It particularly discusses the cultural depictions, history and politics of climate change, and the role of colonialism in driving the issue.
Most associate the onset of climate change with increasing carbon emissions courtesy of the rapid
industrialization in the twentieth century. Ghosh argues that while Industrial Capitalism is one of the key turning points in the history of human induced climate change, imperialism and colonialism played a major role in its acceleration. Shifting from a Westernized “ Global “ perspective, he argues that at this point the entire humanity is culpable for the state of our civilization, some more than others.
